I'm finally getting to the organizing stage of my craft room October Overhaul. It's taken a few weeks to get here but, whew, I had a lot projects for this room... and I'm not quite finished yet, but I'm getting there. There's still more to be posted later, but for now here's the area above my new craft desk. The pink boxes are a makeover of some dollar store boxes that I already had.
Here they are before. They were still in really good shape, but the colour no longer worked with my new craft room colour scheme. So, they needed a makeover.
I decided to paint them with the Beauti-tone paint & primer combo in the same Moulin Rouge pink as my desk makeover. This pic was after one coat, but it took three. I used a small foam roller so it was pretty easy to do. I left the insides as is because it's just for storage and won't be seen. After I painted them I sprayed them with 2 coats of Tremclad urethane to help protect the paint.
I used the same contact paper as my desk makeover for the lids. This was very easy to do. I measured my pieces of paper, leaving about 2" on all sides to fold over.
After removing the backing I rested the lid on the contact paper and pressed. I turned it over and worked out any bubbles on the top. Then I made a cut as shown below and folded the paper up.
Then I simply folded the other edges up. Then I made a slit at each corner and folded the contact paper over to the inside of the lid. To finish off the inside I secured it with scotch tape just so the contact paper wouldn't shift or come loose when removing the lids.
Here are the finished boxes.
I cut out some labels out of cardboard (that I saved from behind a picture) and spray painted them with Rustoleum chalkboard paint. I attached them to the boxes with double sided tape. Now I can easily change the labels with chalk to reflect the contents of the boxes.
I decided I wanted to keep my pink boxes open all the time for easy access, so I put the lids on the bottoms. I'm using them to store the smaller items that I sell on ebay. I've been selling on ebay for years, selling mostly vintage and some newer items. The boxes are labelled Jewelry, Linens, Doilies, Scarves, and Need Photos, and Need Posting. This will help me to keep these things nicely organized. I also sell vintage and some newer craft patterns and pattern books, which will be organized elsewhere.
Here's the finished area above my craft desk. I bought all the other storage boxes, baskets, and containers from thrift stores over a period of months planning for this makeover. They're holding all my different craft supplies and thrifted finds to be used in future projects.
You can see my wine caddy makeover for paint supplies on the desk, which I posted about here. Also, I just found the glass storage containers on my desk at my thrift store for $5 for the set, and I love how they look. Now, I just have to figure out what to keep in them.
My new pink boxes go so nicely with my new craft room desk, which I already posted about here. I'm so excited to finally start getting things reorganized and back into this room. I was starting to think it would never happen, but things are starting to take shape now and it's moving along just great. My wardrobe makeover into a computer armoire is almost finished. Yay!! That post will be coming later this week, so stay tuned!!

ReplyDeleteThat is such a cute idea. I'm always curious about someone else's craft-sewing room -- just snoopy that way. I love my space and had it all planned out on graph paper before we even moved into this house -- I'm a tad-bit OCD, too! Have fun getting all organized.
ReplyDeleteThanks Carol! I'm one of those people who enjoys organizing, and I'm a bit of a planner myself. That's a lot of the fun for me, but I tend to plan projects in my head and sometimes I change my mind along the way and end up decorating by the seat of my pants. lol. Thanks so much for stopping by!
